The needle fariy

鍼神 The needle fariy. In a 拾遺記 Collection of Miscellaneous Fragments, we read, that " 魏文帝 Wei-wan-te, changed the name of his favourite concu- bine 薛靈芸 Selh-ling yun to 夜來Yay-lae, ' it comes by night;' this lady was celebrated for her needle-work, for although she dwelt in a deeply-shaded tent, she needed not the light of a candle, but could cut out and complete a gar- ment in no time : his majesty would not wear anything, un- less it had been cut out and worked by Yay-lae ; so that the people in the palace called her 鍼神 the needle fairy."
